I like the C230 coupe more than I should. It's just too bad they're so expensive to maintain and not as reliable as Toyota :(
That said, the inspection has plenty of time left on it, and it is cheap RWD.
Most likely I'm smart enough not to buy it though

I don't get the hate for the C-class coupe. Yes it's cheaply made, but it's still an RWD turbo hatchback available with a manual and with a poor resale value.

I like these, but that interior is wretched. I can smell it from here.

I like the car too, but the real problem is poor reliability and expensive service. Almost every German car from say 1998-2005 is a piece of shit mechanically. Ze Neu Malaise Era.
If it weren't for those issues, I'd take it.

probably left the sunroof open and now the cloth interior likely smells like shit :(

A guy down the street from me has a white one. I think they look a little tall with a big boots or something, and wimpy down lower. They need an AMG sort of make over. I don't hate it, it's still a turbo manual hatch.

You gotta pay to play. Less reliable than a Toyota; yes. More fun, luxurious, fast, and enjoyable; yes.

It's ugly though.
It has all the sins of an economy hatch (small, ugly, low powered) and none of the virtues (cheap, cheap, cheap). While having all the sins of a luxury car (expensive, hard to maintain, unreliable) and none of the virtues (looks, status, gadgets, power).
My dad was considering that turd back in 2003 to replace his toyota celica. So glad I convinced him to look elsewhere.

These cars are tanks and I would say from my experience much more reliable then Toyotas of the same year. My moms went to nearly 300k miles with regular maintenance. And would be still driving today if she didn't trade it in on a new one.

Actually, much as I disdain most '97- 08ish Mercedes (W208 & 210 excepted), these aren't really unreliable. The intake switchover motor for the supercharger fails a lot and is expensive, and the big sunroofs are junk, and the climate control flap arms break all the time, but they rarely leave anyone stranded, and most I see have well past 100k on them. The manual shifters feel awful, and the engines sound really weedy, for the record. They are punchy and RWD though, so that helps.
